Why this history matters
Its history has two principal phases at different addresses. Keeping those phases separate reveals both the appeal of the idea and the difficulty of maintaining a small themed casino.
A New Idea in the Former Money Tree
The original Eddie's opened in June 1987 in the former Money Tree building at 211 North Virginia Street. Money Tree had belonged to Reno's late-1970s expansion and had encountered financial trouble during the following downturn.
The reuse did not establish an uninterrupted business. A building could retain a gaming purpose while changing its operator, audience, and identity completely.
Contemporary Nevada tourism material identifies Ramada's involvement and names Paul Rubeli as president of its gaming group. Eddie's was therefore not simply an eccentric independent bar; it was a themed experiment connected to an established corporate gaming business.
The Staff and the Room Performed the Decade
Cars and jukeboxes were only part of the presentation. Singing waitresses, poodle-skirt imagery, movies, music, and food promotions made the theme something a customer encountered throughout the visit.
Management described employees as cast members. That language is revealing: service itself was meant to participate in the entertainment. The casino offered a version of the 1950s built around fun and recognition, rather than an attempt to recreate the decade's full social history.
The surviving promotional material shows how thoroughly the idea reached into the business. Matches, cards, drink coupons, chips, and tokens repeated the identity. They help reconstruct the atmosphere, although they do not establish precise table counts or betting limits.
A Short First Run and an Unclear Transition
The original full-casino phase is cataloged through 1989. That year, contemporary reporting described Ramada's plans to sell or transfer Eddie's with other gaming properties during corporate restructuring.
The precise legal buyer and transition are not fully established by the available record. Trademark evidence helps identify companies associated with the name but cannot replace a gaming-license or ownership file.
By 1994, a service-mark application connected Lucky Reno Casino, Inc. with Eddie's at 45 West Second Street. The later location therefore belongs to a different corporate and physical chapter, not simply an unchanged continuation of the Virginia Street casino.
The Name Returns on a Smaller Scale
Collector and local-history records place a slots-only Eddie's at the West Second Street address from 1996 to 1999. The smaller gaming format matters: the name survived, but not necessarily the full experience of the first operation.
Reno's 1997 flood affected downtown, although the precise damage to Eddie's and its role in closure are not established. It would be misleading to give the flood sole responsibility without stronger business evidence.
Eddie's remains an instructive example of themed casino experimentation outside the giant resorts. A recognizable era could organize a complete guest experience, but a strong theme did not guarantee a long operating life.
